Dolly Thompsett

Dolly Thompsett’s atmospheric landscapes explore the language of the sublime: their particular construction might lead one to describe her as a knowing post-romantic. As in traditional paintings that evoke the sublime (where man felt overwhelmed by the greatness of nature,) the figures and man- made habitats represented in Thompsett’s epic vistas are relatively small in scale, set in environments that hover somewhere between watery depths and heavenly heights. She skews the spatial logic in her pictures, playing with the presumed distance from the viewer, positioning her figurative elements within a striking layering of paint to physically and conceptually immerse the viewer.
