Hilary Berseth’s works take a variety of forms, but all are essentially concerned with the interaction between natural mechanisms and scientific processes. Berseth intervenes in naturally occurring phenomena, such as beehives, to produce pieces in which instinct and chance are mingled with artistic agency. Similarly, the artist uses electrolysis to produce sculptures which are “algorithmic”, built up incrementally on a microscopic scale - a random natural process becomes aesthetically interesting because of human interference.
